A Season of Preparation
Lent is the season in which we prepare ourselves to remember Jesus' death and celebrate his resurrection. The season lasts 40 days plus six Sundays, from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday, February 22 to April 7 this year.
Ash Wednesday again will feature a "drive-through ashing" under the north portico from 7 to 8 a.m. Worship with imposition of ashes also will be at 7 p.m. that evening.
Read the gospels! Pastor Jim again challenges you to read all four gospels during Lent. That's two chapters a day. A reading guide with questions to consider will be available.
Talk about it! You're invited to discuss the gospel readings and what they mean to you in a Growth Group that meets for one hour at 7 p.m. Mondays starting February 27. Bring a New Testament and notes on your reading.
Details of a new Growth Group and series of messages for Lent will come soon.
Valentine Dinner The annual Valentine Dinner sponsored by United Methodist Men is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 14. The Paola High School Madrigals will perform. Linda from the Sale Barn is doing the meal. Cost is $9 each. Sign up at the info table by the elevator, or call the church office.
"Found Object Art" for Good Friday
"Found object art" is assembled from everyday objects, usually by combining common things in uncommon ways.
We're looking for found object artworks to illustrate the Stations of the Cross during a special worship service on Good Friday, April 6.
The 14 stations illustrate the journey Jesus took from his condemnation by Pilate to his death on the cross to being placed in the tomb.
We will set up the stations throughout the church and walk to them in small groups.
Small, creative, evocative artworks will illustrate each station. For example, for Station Six, "Jesus is stripped of his clothes", you could make something incorporating dice to illustrate soldiers casting lots for his clothing.
For a list of the 14 stations and accompanying scriptures, or to submit ideas or artworks, talk to Pastor Jim or see the brochure at the info table by the elevator.
Faith & Film
"The Help" is the February movie in Abby Burnett's Faith & Film series. It will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, February 26. "The Help" tells the story of two black maids and a white woman confronting racism in the 1960s Mississippi.
Guest Speaker
The Rev. Donovan Gaffney will be our guest preacher on Sunday, February 19. He is a retired Air Force chaplain who has a long association with LaCygne UMC. Pastor Jim will be away that weekend working as head spiritual director of a Camino weekend of Christian renewal.
Call to Prayer
Pastor Jim invites everyone to an extended time of prayer for two areas of interest.
- The Camino weekends in February at which he and Linda have leadership roles (Jim February 16
19, Linda February 23-26).
- Delegates preparing for the United Methodist General Conference starting April 24 in Tampa,
Florida.
Prayer for General Conference
Bishop Robert Schnase of Missouri invites you to "Remember the Future: 30 Days of Preparation", a series of reflections in preparation for General Conference 2012.
These daily meditations explore hope, purpose, leadership and making and becoming disciples of Jesus Christ. With Wesleyan, scriptural, and leadership themes, explore together the mission of the church in a time of great change.
To find them, follow this link: www.ministrymatters.com/30days.
Thinking About Graduation
We're looking for names of upcoming graduates. If someone in your family is graduating from high school, middle school or college this spring, let the church office know (or write it on your Connection Card). We'll honor graduates at graduation breakfast and during worship May 6.
Confirmation Class
We're recruiting members for a new Confirmation Class. Eighth graders and older are welcome -- adults, too. Let the church office or Pastor Jim know.
Boy Scout Sunday
Boy Scouts will lead us in worship on February 12. They'll also offer a pancake breakfast and brunch that morning.
United Methodist Women Sunday, which is usually about the same time as Scout Sunday in February, will be April 22 this year.
