What to Expect

Whether you are a lifelong United Methodist or just starting to get curious about God, you are welcome here! Here is a little bit about what to expect when you visit Paola UMC. We worship in person on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and livestream our service on YouTube

Where do I park?
Street parking is available along Mission street, Shawnee street, and Pearl street. We also have a parking lot at the corner of Silver and Shawnee, where you are welcome to park! For folks with disabilities, our accessible parking is on Mission street by the North Entrance.

Which door do I use?
Most people enter through the North doors off of Mission street. This is our accessible entrance. Then, you can take the elevator or the stairs up to the sanctuary. You are welcome to use the West doors off of Silver street too.

Is there a dress code?
No! Here you will find people in suits and people in shorts and jeans. The message sounds the same no matter what you are wearing!  Seriously, God accepts you “just as you are” and so do we!

Is the church accessible for people with disabilities?
We have an accessible entrance on the North side of our building (off Mission street) and an elevator to all floors. We are ADA compliant. We also have hearing assistance devices available. Our worship services have no spotlights and the music is at a moderate volume for our neurodivergent and sensory-sensitive congregants.

What about security? Are we safe at your church?
We have a camera-based security system that’s monitored by church staff. Our building has a basement room with no windows in case of severe weather. Staff and volunteers have passed a background check, and are trained and certified through Safe Gatherings to keep children and adults safe.

What about kids?
Children are an important part of God’s family. Jesus said “Let the little children come to me” (Matthew 19:14 and Mark 10:14). It’s an honor to welcome your little ones exactly how God made them, including their wiggles, giggles, and noise. Grab a children’s bulletin from the table on the way into service!  Kids can stay with you or visit the playroom.

Even babies and toddlers?
We have a couple options for parents and caregivers of babies and toddlers, so you can choose what works best for your family. First, you are always welcome to keep your babies and toddlers in worship! Or, if you prefer, there is also a play room near the sanctuary filled with toys for all ages. The play room has a small bathroom and a diaper changing station. Parents and caregivers can see and hear worship from this room.

Are there Sunday school classes or small groups for adults?
Join our adult Sunday school group that meets at 8:15 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall!  No registration required! We also offer short term studies. Check the bulletin, newsletter, or Connecting Point for more information.

Can I participate in Communion?
Yes!  As a United Methodist Church, we believe communion is open to all.  If you are a first-time visitor, regular visitor, from another denomination, or just seeking a church home, you are welcome to receive communion.

We take communion by way of intinction. First, you are offered a piece of bread. Then, you are invited to dip your bread into a cup of juice. We have gluten-free wafers available too.

Holy Communion is a time we experience the love and grace of Jesus Christ.  Sometimes, people call Holy Communion the Lord’s Supper or Eucharist, but they all mean the same thing.
